Buckle up, folks - the fasten seatbelt sign is on. We’re experiencing some Slight Turbulence.

WELCOME / WHY I DO THIS

I’m Chelsea - Podcast Host of “In My Non-Expert Opinion” since 2017, Podcast Strategist & writer. I’m also a full-time digital nomad, currently settled in Cape Town, South Africa. I’ve been to 30+ countries and spent 2023 living in a new country almost every month.

Slight Turbulence is the travel magazine you wish existed on the back of airplane seats.

In Slight Turbulence, you’ll find stories, advice and criticism around:

— The constant undercurrent of anxiety that full-time travelers are accustomed to (and sometimes enjoy)

— Wild animal encounters (like the 1 cm small Irukandji jellyfish who float in the waters of Australia and if stung by one, will cause a sense of impending doom — yes, really.)

— Dealing with heartbreak alone in a country where you don’t speak the language (in fact, the only think you can say is “do you have oat milk?")

— Realizing how toxic the wellness and beauty industry is the further from your homeland you get

— If traveling full-time is fun, worth it, or as luxe as seen on the internet

— The meaning (or lack thereof?) of life

My goal with Slight Turbulence is inform, entertain, provoke, and develop my unique writing style. If anything, I want you to laugh, and keep thinking about a piece days after reading.

For Q1 of 2025 (Jan - March), my Substack will operate on a patron model.

If my work makes you feel a certain way, provoke a certain thought, or smile on the inside (hopefully outside too), you can support it financially by subscribing for just $5/mo or $50/year. The pressure of exclusive paid benefits like subscriber-only comments, chats, bonus content etc. is against the ethos of why I started Slight Turbulence, which was to experiment with my writing.

My 2025 word of the year is UNBOUND, and I refuse to be bound to any expectations I set with a paywall. The only paywalled content you’ll see in Q1 is if I want it to remain semi-private (knowing damn well the irony of that statement - is anything on the internet private??). If you can’t support financially or don’t feel ready, but enjoy my work, please share my posts on Substack Notes, in your group chat, newsletter - anything helps and us micro-creators gotta stick together <3

This content is what I wish existed when I started traveling. I’m going to share how to find CHEAP AF travel AND what it’s like dealing with soul-crushing heartbreak thousands of miles away from home (like in a fishing village in Germany). You’ll learn how to negotiate with taxi drivers in Albania AND be entertained by my very impulsive dating choices.

This isn’t a “laptop lifestyle” aspirational publication - this is if “Eat, Pray, Love” had a street-smart baby, who carried millennial existential dread AND loved being a leisurely lady! You’ll get fun gossip, cultural criticism, lockdown in Germany tales, helpful travel advice and fun mystery surprises along the way. It’s fun, it’s sexy, it’s silly, and deep - it’s slightly turbulent. Put your seatbelt on!
